A top wicketkeeper in his prime, Bruce French spent two tours as understudy to Paul Downton before being given his chance behind the stumps in 1986.
Made 16 test appearances and kept Jack Russell out of the team for almost two years on wicketkeeping merit alone.
He was renowned for being an injury prone player, he missed matches through being bitten by a dog, contracting chicken pox from his daughter, and was once knocked over by a car while on the way to hospital to be treated for concussion, having earlier in the day been hit on the head by a ball thrown by a spectator.
